(Indianapolis) – A program created to encourage cooperative purchasing between local units of government saved Indiana units more than $1.1 million in 2007. U.S. Communities is a cooperative purchasing program which is being widely used by members of the Association of Indiana Counties (AIC), Indiana Association of Cities and Towns (IACT) and the Indiana Association of School Business Officials (IASBO).

"We are pleased to see that Indiana units are already taking advantage of the savings offered by U.S. Communities," said David Bottorff, AIC Executive Director. "One of the recommendations in the Shepard Kernan report is that units would team up on purchases to save money. We are pleased to announce that many Indiana units have long been saving money through cooperative purchasing."

U.S. Communities provides a national purchasing forum for local and state government agencies, school districts (K-12), higher education and non-profits nationwide by pooling the purchasing power of over 87,000 public agencies.

"We understand the importance of using local vendors, but when possible, we encourage our members to consider how U.S. Communities can do a great deal to help them reduce the costs associated with providing essential public services," said Matt Greller, IACT Executive Director.

"We are making every effort to encourage our members to use cooperative purchasing when appropriate." said Dennis Costerison, IASBO Executive Director.
