Press Release
LAFAYETTE – State and local officials from Fort Wayne to Lafayette will be joined by Gov. Mitch Daniels and Reps. Dan Burton and Steve Buyer for a special event next week.
At noon Wednesday, members of the Hoosier Heartland Corridor Association will break ground on the last segment of the project in Indiana. The ceremony will be held at Faith Community Center one mile east of Interstate 65 on Ind. 26 in Lafayette.
Since 1984, the bipartisan coalition has promoted the connection of two of the state’s largest cities with a 4-lane highway. Since then, the Wabash-to-Huntington and Logansport-to-Peru segments have been completed and the road has been extended past Fort Wayne to the Ohio border. Ohio officials are planning to connect the 4-lane link from Fort Wayne with the Port of Toledo.
The corridor, one of 21 national priority corridors established by the U.S. Department of Transportation in the 1980s, is on schedule to be the first corridor completed. The route of the segment yet to be built in Indiana follows the path of existing Ind. 25 from Lafayettte to Logansport. Existing 4-lane segments follow the course off U.S. 24 from Logansport to Fort Wayne.
Nearly 400 Hoosier Heartland Corridor members will attend t he ceremony which will be part of the association’s annual meeting. Doors to the event open at 11 a.m. Festivities will include the world’s largest bass d rum from Purdue and the internationally-known Logansport Children’s Choir.
