Indianapolis' third major public art exhibition goes on display this morning. "Chakaia Booker: Mass Transit" features 10 sculptures made from tires that are cut, folded and woven. Booker will join Deputy Mayor Nick Weber and representatives from the Arts Council of Indianapolis and Cultural Development Commission downtown to open the exhibition.

Art made from tires that are cut, folded and woven into dynamic sculptures – some nearly 10’ tall – will debut on July 22 when the city’s third major public art exhibition opens. Chakaia Booker: Mass Transit features 10 sculptures by the nationally renowned artist Chakaia Booker. Nine of the 10 sculptures are new and were created by the artist following her visit to Indianapolis and research of the city’s history and heritage. This is the city’s third major exhibition since 2005 and was produced and curated by the Arts Council of Indianapolis as part of the Public Art Indianapolis initiative.
Booker will join Deputy Mayor Nick Weber and representatives from the Arts Council of Indianapolis and Cultural Development Commission at the corner of Senate and Indiana avenues on July 22 at 10:30 a.m. to open the exhibition. The public event will take place near “Holler,” a sculpture created by Booker that’s installed in front of iMOCA, the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art.

Public Art Indianapolis was initiated in 2004 and encourages the presentation of art by local, national and international artists in public spaces throughout the city.
