Press Release

ANDERSON, Ind., Sept. 18, 2007 — AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) announced today that AT&T Indiana is in the process of adding 475 new jobs across the state. Gov. Mitch Daniels joined AT&T Indiana President George Fleetwood today in a rural area of Madison County to celebrate the continued expansion of the state’s telecom sector. Since passage of House Bill 1279, AT&T Indiana has announced a total of 1,500 new jobs.

"Our new telecommunications law is creating jobs for Hoosiers and leading to the development of innovative technologies our state needs," said Gov. Daniels. "AT&T's continued investment in new employees and leading-edge products is a great example."

Last December, AT&T launched its new Internet Protocol (IP)-based television service, AT&T U-verseSM TV. Many of the employees in these 475 new positions have been hired during the past 12 months to upgrade the company’s advanced IP access network and to install AT&T U-verse in customers’ homes. Additional hiring will continue in the months ahead.

“Governor Daniels deserves tremendous credit for giving the state’s telecom sector a green light to create jobs and deploy next-generation technology,” said Fleetwood. “When you combine the reforms in House Bill 1279 with the rapid subscriber growth that we are seeing for our new television services, you have a recipe that fuels our need for additional employees.”

AT&T is the only national service provider to offer a 100 percent IP-based television service, making U-verse TV one of the most advanced television offerings available anywhere.
The fiber-rich AT&T network infrastructure brings higher bandwidth to customers’ homes and provides a minimum of 25 Mbps at the longest loop lengths to deliver advanced television, Internet and, eventually Voice over IP services. AT&T U-verse is available in areas of Anderson, Bloomington, Indianapolis, Kokomo and Muncie.

On March 14, 2006, Gov. Daniels signed HB 1279 into law. The legislation was championed by Rep. Mike Murphy and Sen. Brandt Hershman. The legislation received overwhelming bipartisan support. Since passage of the bill, telecom and cable companies around the state have announced investments of nearly $400 million.

Earlier this year, AT&T also announced job growth in Indianapolis and Evansville resulting from the passage of HB 1279. In July, the company officially opened a new Internet subscriber call center in downtown Indianapolis that is slated to employ 425 Hoosiers. AT&T also plans to hire 600 workers to operate a wireless customer care center that is scheduled to open in Evansville next month.

Last April, within weeks of HB 1279 becoming law, AT&T Indiana launched its High Speed to the Heartland initiative to bring high speed digital subscriber line (DSL) Internet service to every central office operated by AT&T in the state. That initiative brought new broadband service to an additional 33 rural communities and was completed three months ahead of schedule. This build-out brought DSL service to rural towns as small as Stewart (population: 268) in Warren County.
