Press Release

INDIANAPOLIS—Today, Clarian Health Partners, based in Indianapolis, Indiana and Arnett HealthSystem based in Lafayette, Indiana announced a partnership that will bolster health care services in the greater Lafayette area. One component of the overall plan is a joint venture hospital in Lafayette.

Clarian Health Partners and Arnett Health System both share the common mission of improving the health of patients and citizens in communities throughout Indiana, a mutual interest that prompted the partnering discussions earlier this year.

“We are looking forward to partnering with Arnett, its physicians and the community,” said Daniel F. Evans, Jr., President & CEO, Clarian Health Partners. “Our partnership with Arnett is designed to enhance patient care delivery and health care capabilities in the Lafayette area.”

“This partnership will also increase the momentum in the development of the Life Sciences Corridor from Lafayette to Indianapolis,” Evans continued. “Clarian and Indiana University are primary forces behind the life sciences, and the partnership in Lafayette will augment the strong collaborations and collegiality that already exist. We are excited about the impact that this partnership will have on research, education and clinical excellence, not only in Lafayette and Indianapolis but across the state and beyond.”

The partnership between Clarian and the Arnett physicians brings a new model of health care delivery to the Lafayette area that is expected to yield extraordinary benefits for patients. The integrated care model allows for seamless transition in care between office visits and inpatient stays, and offers unprecedented levels of teamwork between physicians and the hospital enhancing the level of care received by the patients.

“We are looking forward to partnering with Clarian,” said Dr. Michael Skehan, President and Chief Executive Officer, of Arnett HealthSystem. “Patient care is the number one priority for both of our organizations. Clarian has tremendous resources, capabilities and has a history of delivering the very highest in quality of patient care. Arnett brings many doctors who excel in their specialties. A partnership between our two entities will open the doors for the community to receive a level of health care quality that is unprecedented.”

The Clarian-Arnett partnership will strengthen the commitment to medical education and research through the affiliation that already exists between Clarian and the Indiana University School of Medicine, which also views this partnership as a logical and natural fit.

“Bringing additional resources to Lafayette will further enhance research and educational collaborations between Clarian, Arnett and the IU School of Medicine which partners with Purdue University to provide the first two years of medical education to some of our students on the West Lafayette campus,” said D. Craig Brater, MD, Dean, Indiana University School of Medicine and Vice President of Life Sciences at IU. “There is already tremendous clinical, research and educational work taking place, and the Clarian and Arnett partnership will add to our collective ability to enhance the lives of patients. We are delighted about the opportunity to advance the work underway in this area.”

Some of the current work in the area involves research and grant partnerships including work with the IU Cancer Center. Additionally, 40 of the Arnett physicians are Indiana University School of Medicine volunteer faculty involved in the education of the first- and second-year medical students at the IUSM education center in West Lafayette, some of whom also contribute to various research projects.

Long-term results of the Clarian – Arnett partnership will include availability of clinical trials and increased research efforts, both of which will have a positive impact on clinical outcomes for patients. The partnership will also fuel continued growth and work in areas of research and education, strengthening all parties and communities involved as well as increasing jobs and productivity in Lafayette and infusing additional momentum and strength into the area and the I-65 life sciences corridor.

The approved model of the hospital includes plans for a 150-bed facility, at a cost of nearly $170 million. The facility will be a full service community-based hospital. The joint venture hospital will be split ownership, with the majority owned by Clarian and a minority owned by Arnett physicians – similar to the Clarian North and Clarian West ownership models. The existing Arnett sites will also become owned by the new joint venture.

Arnett is the largest multi-specialty medical clinic in Indiana, offering quality health care services to patients in a 14-county area. More than 140 physicians practice in more than 45 medical specialties and subspecialties. Arnett’s mission is to improve the health and quality of life in the communities served.

Clarian Health Partners is comprised of Methodist Hospital, Indiana University Hospital and Riley Hospital for Children and is an Indiana-based, private, non-profit organization, offering a broad base of tertiary services, specialized pediatric care and a Level 1 Trauma Center.

Clarian is Indiana’s largest and most comprehensive health system and one of the busiest hospital systems in the nation. Clarian’s mission is to improve the health of patients and the community through innovation and excellence in care, education, research and service.

Over the coming months, details and developments of the plan will be shared and a groundbreaking of the new hospital will take place later in 2006.
