City of Evansville Press Release

(Evansville, IN) - Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel today praised plans put forth by BBJJ Condominium Investment Consortium, Inc. to develop 18 upscale condominiums in the former Green Convention Center annex located at the corner of Walnut Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard in downtown Evansville.

“This project demonstrates the growing confidence we are generating in investing in our downtown,” said Mayor Weinzapfel. “My administration has worked diligently to bring people back downtown, into the heart of our city. We have had a hand in bringing many great attractions - the new children’s museum, the African-American museum, the LST – to the downtown area, and through the loft program, we are creating additional housing opportunities for downtown living.

“It should be encouraging to City residents that the developer has not yet asked for a single cent of City subsidy for the project,” continued Mayor Weinzapfel. “The private sector is clearly sending the message that downtown Evansville is the place to be and has a bright future.”

Named “The Atrium”, this project includes plans for 18 condominium units, each ranging from 1,300 to over 2,100 square feet, on three separate floors. All units will have a minimum of two bedrooms and two baths. Nearly half of the units will have individual outdoor balconies. The third floor units will have interior stairs and fourth floor lofts. Assigned parking will be available in the surface lot to the south of the building and also in the Executive Inn parking garage.

“The architects for this project, Veazey Parrott Durkin & Shoulders, Inc., are local and have designed a beautiful exterior that will be a welcome change from the current vacant structure,” said Mayor Weinzapfel. “Downtown is fortunate to be growing not just in size but aesthetically. The exterior improvements to this building will further the stunning cityscape that has already been put forth by private sector partners Old National Bank, Vectren and Casino Aztar.”
