The Rural Utilities Service (RUS) of the USDA Administers the Broadband Program to deliver programs in a way that support increasing economic opportunity and improve the quality of life of rural residents.

“Rural America is lagging far behind urban areas in broadband Internet access availability,” state Mike Farmer, Vice President of Operations for Cinergy MetroNet. “Cinergy MetroNet understands the economic development in rural communities can be strengthened if advanced broadband services are made available.”

Cinergy MetroNet will use the funds to deploy fiber directly to more than 75,000 Indiana homes and businesses. Services will include local and long distance telephone, high-speed Internet, cable television and security monitoring.

“The City of Greencastle is pleased to be a partner with the USDA and Cinergy MetroNet to bring 21st century telecommunications to Greencastle,” stated Nancy Michael, Mayor of Greencastle. “One of our top economic development goals for the community has been to provide a high-speed, high capacity, telecommunications infrastructure to meet the needs of our residents, businesses, industries and DePauw University today and into the future.” “As we begin this partnership to achieve our goal, we are looking forward to cutting the ribbon to our entrance ramp to the information super-highway.”

Greencastle, Ind. is scheduled to be the first market to launch the new services. In preparation, MetroNet has received a cable television franchise in Greencastle and has completed engineering of the town network.
