INDIANAPOLIS – Mayor Bart Peterson was elected to the Board of Directors of the National League of Cities (NLC) at the recent NLC Congress of Cities in Nashville, Tenn.

NLC is the oldest and largest national organization representing
municipal governments throughout the United States and serves as a
resource and advocate for 18,000 U.S. cities. The Board of Directors is
the NLC’s governing body.
“The needs of cities and urban residents should be at the forefront
of national and state policies, and I look forward to being a strong
voice for Indianapolis residents and other cities across the state,”
Mayor Peterson said. “I’m also excited that we can help bring
attention to the good work being done here in Indianapolis and continue
to showcase our city to the nation.”
Throughout his first term as mayor, Mayor Peterson has taken an active
role in statewide and national organizations that advance the cause of
cities and towns and their residents. Currently, he serves as:
* Chair of NLC’s Institute for Youth, Education & Families, which
advances policies and initiatives that benefit children and families.
* Member of the advisory board of the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM),
the official nonpartisan organization of cities with populations of
30,000 or more.
* Second vice-president of the Indiana Association of Cities & Towns,
the affiliation of the state’s municipalities that work together to
enhance the knowledge and skills of their leaders, exchange information
and combine resources to influence policy decisions at the state and
federal levels.
In the past, he has served as:
* Chair of the USCM Committee on Arts, Parks, Entertainment and Sports,
which developed mayors’ positions and national and local strategies to
enhance arts and culture in cities. It also addresses policies and
initiatives for city parks and recreational activities.
* President of the Indiana Metropolitan Mayors Alliance, a coalition of
Indiana’s 20 largest cities.
