Indiana Company Turns to Hollywood Magic

InsideINdianaBusiness.com Report

An Indiana company has enlisted the help of Hollywood special effects experts to develop state-of-the-art technology. Glasses.com, a unit of Indianapolis-based WellPoint Inc. (NYSE: WLP) says its iPad app and website allow users to virtually try different styles of glasses before making a purchasing decision. WellPoint obtained the Glasses.com domain as part of last year's multi-million dollar acquisition of 1-800-CONTACTS Inc. Public Relations Director Gene Rodriguez showed off the technology with Barb Lewis in the Business of Health.

WellPoint did not announce the value of the 1-800-CONTACTS purchase, but at the time the deal The Wall Street Journal estimated it could be a $900 million acquisition.

WellPoint has a patent on the technology, which can accomplish its goal in seconds as opposed to a couple days by previous post-production standards in Hollywood.

The Glasses.com website includes more than three-thousand pairs of eyeglasses and the app includes 1,700.
