A Chicago-based rail components company is extending the layoff timeline for dozens of northwest Indiana workers. In a notice to the state, Amsted Rail Co. Inc. says it will part with more than 50 employees at the end of the week at its Hammond plant and intends to keep more than 40 working into February.
The company says customer demand will determine if those jobs will be around beyond February.
The plant previously announced all 90 would be let go by the end of the year, citing a "dramatic downturn in business."
Amsted adds that one dozen employees will be retrained for a new line in January.
