Indy Drum Competition Expecting to Draw Big Crowd

An estimated 4,000 participants and nearly 35,000 fans will converge on Marion County this week for the Drum Corps International World Championships at Lucas Oil Stadium. Officials with the Indianapolis-based organization say the four-day event has a $10 million economic impact on the region.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The world's best in marching music will compete in the Circle City August 8-11 at Lucas Oil Stadium. Thousands of drum corps enthusiasts from around the world will descend upon Indianapolis for the culmination of the 40th Drum Corps International Summer Tour and the spectacular DCI World Championships. Feel the power of the music, experience the team spirit and competition and be amazed when the best of the best drum and bugle corps perform at Lucas Oil Stadium.

About the DCI World Championships

The DCI World Championships mark the culmination of the annual Drum Corps International Tour, a series of more than 100 live competitive events that take place across the United States from June through August. As a week-long celebration of the “very best” in the world of marching music, in 2012, more than 40 drum and bugle corps will compete in two classes for the Open and World Class World Championship titles. Participating units will represent more than 20 states and Canada.

Wednesday, Aug. 8:
Individual & Ensemble Competition
2 p.m. at the Indiana Convention Center, 100 S. Capital Ave.

DCI's Individual & Ensemble Competition (I&E) showcases some of the finest solo and small group performances of drum corps musicians and color guard members.

Thursday, Aug. 9
World Championship Prelims
9 a.m.; gates open at 8 a.m.

The Prelims feature the competitive performances of all World and Open Class corps as they compete head-to-head in this in this all-day competition. From a field of more than 40 corps, the 25 top-scoring groups will advance to Friday’s Semifinals competition.

Friday, Aug. 10
World Championship Semifinals
2 p.m.; gates open at 12:30 p.m.

The top 25 corps after the Prelims competition on Thursday (no matter World or Open Class distinction) will compete during this event. The 12 highest scoring corps will advance to the Saturday evening Finals competition for the chance to earn the title of World Champion.

Saturday, Aug. 11
Celebrate Indy Arts! Parade
11 a.m.

The second annual Celebrate Indy Arts! Parade will bring more than 30 of the world's finest marching music ensembles from around the world together with members of the local Indianapolis arts community in the most musical, creative and fun-filled parade to ever hit the streets of the Circle City. This parade brings more musical units together than any other parade in the country.

The parade will wind through the streets of downtown Indianapolis, ending on the American Legion Mall. Concluding the event in the early afternoon will be a tribute to America, as more than 2,000 brass musicians assemble to play an en masse rendition of "Battle Hymn of the Republic."

World Championship Finals
5:30 p.m.

The top 12 corps as determined by the previous days Prelims and Semifinals competitions will vie for top honors and the chance to be called World Champion during this concluding event of the 2012 Drum Corps International Tour.
