Around 200 teachers and staff members at Hammond public schools could lose their jobs. Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report the cuts could be a part of district plans to slash nearly $8 million because of falling enrollment.
Officials sent reduction in force letters to employees last week to many teachers and long-term substitutes, and said some of the savings will come from a dozen retirements.
Hammond School Board President Deborah White says the district will unfortunately have to let go several new teachers.
The letters indicate the possibility of layoffs and the board says they will re-examine all possibilities over the summer.
