Turkey Processing Plant Moving Forward

InsideINdianaBusiness.com Report

Knox County Economic Development Corp. President Gary Gentry expects the real estate deal with Farbest to close next week.

Construction on a turkey processing plant in southwest Indiana could begin within the next month. Huntingburg-based Farbest Foods Inc. announced plans last year to create up to 600 jobs in Vincennes over the next few years.

Farbest has been working on reducing the cost of the project. The company had initially planned to spend $70-$75 million on the processing plant, but the initial price came in at $89 million. The company is also building a feed mill as part of the project.

Gentry says he is confident the area has the work force to fill the openings. He says the county is working with the company on putting together a "pre-qualified candidate pool" ahead of the plant's opening.

The company currently employs about 850 people at plants in Huntingburg and Dubois.
