An Anderson architect says he wants to help breathe new life into the closed Wigwam gymnasium. Our partners at the Anderson Herald Bulletin report the city's Redevelopment Commission has endorsed a plan to spend $10,000 on a feasibility study on Jesse Wilkerson's ideas, including turning the former high school gym into a convention center.
Anderson Community Schools approved the closure of the facility last summer in an effort to save more than half of a million dollars in utility costs. The district still owns the property, and the paper reports there have been no talks with the city.
Wilkerson says he has had discussions with multiple companies and a National Basketball Association player who he says are interested in using the space.
The study would still need the approval of Anderson's Board of Public Works.
