Murphy says competing for international investment is a long-term effort.

A delegation from the Muncie-Delaware County Economic Development Alliance will be part of a trade mission to China next month. Vice President of Economic Development Terry Murphy says the organization will use the trip to strengthen relations with its sister city and "find out what opportunities there are." He says the region is working to attract business from around the globe, and there is "a lot of potential" in the Asian nation.

Muncie, Ind. -- Local economic development officials will be traveling to China next week in an effort to market the Muncie-Delaware, IN County community to potential businesses looking to expand into the US market, and to promote and explore opportunities for existing business to sell their products and services in China.

Terry Murphy, Vice President of Economic Development for the Muncie-Delaware County Economic Development Alliance, and Brad Bookout, representing the City of Muncie, will be departing on June 7, 2012. Local officials will join the Indiana Department of Agriculture and Lt. Governor Becky Skillman on Wednesday for the trade show and dinner meeting. Business appointments with Chinese industry leaders and officials from Indiana's sister state, Zhejiang Province, People's Republic of China will begin on June 11 and continue until June 16.

Murphy and Bookout will arrive in China two days prior to the State delegation to make calls on businesses leaders in Zhuji City and Shaoxing County. Muncie and Zhuji City became sister-cities after the formal signing of a Memorandum at the W Hotel in Chicago on April 22, 2010.

"We continue to build relationships with business, industry and government officials there and this is an important step in attracting business to our community," said Murphy. "This trip will allow Muncie-Delaware County to enhance relations with Zhuji City and to find out what opportunities there are for businesses on both sides," noted Murphy.

This is the third year the Muncie-Delaware County delegation has visited China. This trip is part of the community's ongoing "Asian Initiative," supported by the Mayor of Muncie and the Delaware County Commissioners.
