A bridge connecting New Harmony to southeast Illinois will be permanently shut down. The New Harmony Bridge reaches from White County, Illinois over the Wabash River to Posey County, Indiana. Our partners at the Evansville Courier & Press report a bridge commission has decided to close the span following an inspection that showed significant structural problems.
The engineers estimate the repair costs to be more than $8 million. A member of the White County Bridge Commission, which oversees the structure, believes it could be made safe for around $2 million.
But that would still leave an old bridge that is too narrow and has a rotting deck.
Commission members have decided to close the span at noon May 29.
At that point, travelers will have to use the Interstate 64 bridge or another span linking route 41 in Illinois to Indiana 62.
