Schenkel says the annual sale provides a boost for Indiana's economy.
Vera Bradley Inc.'s (Nasdaq: VRA) annual outlet sale starts today in Fort Wayne. The company expects around 60,000 people from across the country to attend the event during its five-day run. Spokeswoman Melissa Schenkel says it takes 800 people, including many temporary hires, to staff the sale.
Schenkel says the company added a third ticketed day to this year's sale in hopes of controlling crowds. This year, customers will pay $5 to get in on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, but will be allowed to shop for free on Saturday and Sunday. Reigstration is required to shop on any day.
Schenkel says the sale has grown since it began in 1983. She says the first sale was held in a ten-foot by ten-foot tent. The event is currently held in the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
