Members of Local 808 of the International Union of Electrical Workers are hoping to attract 1,500 people to their largest rally outside the Whirlpool plant in Evansville February 26. Last summer, Whirlpool announced it would lay off 1,100 Evansville production employees and move its freezer-topped refrigerator and icemaker production to Mexico. Our partners at the Evansville Courier & Press report the first stage of layoffs is scheduled March 26.

The rally is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. and include activities outside the Whirlpool plant and at the Local 808 union hall on nearby Bergdolt Road.
Organizers have invited guests including AFL/CIO President Richard Trumka and Jim Clark, president of the IUE-CWA union with which Local 808 is affiliated.
Employees with the least seniority are expected to lose their jobs first, March 26. The remaining workers will be let go until production ceases in early summer.
In recent months, Local 808 has held a handful of rallies on Whirlpool, and workers have distributed fliers outside local retail stores, asking customers not to buy Whirlpool products.
