[UPDATED] Indiana Casinos Adjust to Bridge Closing

InsideINdianaBusiness.com Report

In a Studio(i) interview, Indiana Gaming Insight Editor Ed Feigenbaum discusses the impact of the Cline Avenue bridge closing with Inside INdiana Business Host Gerry Dick.

Three northwest Indiana casinos continue to deal with the impact of the state's decision to permanently shut down the Cline Avenue Bridge, a key traffic artery to the properties. Indiana Gaming Insight Editor Ed Feigenbaum says the two Majestic Star casinos and the Ameristar Casinos Inc. property in East Chicago face a "very difficult" task to change the traffic patterns of potential customers. He says they will have to embark on expensive marketing campaigns and give customers more reasons to head to the casinos.

Ameristar says it suffered a 10 percent drop in admissions at East Chicago during the first few weeks of the closure and Majestic Star has been forced to lay off at least 40 employees due to decreased traffic.

An issue of Indiana Gaming Insight being released this week has an in-depth examination of the Cline Avenue Bridge situation.

It points out the bridge is also a key link to Whiting's BP Refinery, which is undergoing a nearly $4 billion dollar upgrade. The bridge also provides a route to East Chicago's ArcelorMittal Indiana Harbor facility.

The state announced a temporary closure of the bridge in November and made that a permanent shutdown in late December.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) plans to demolish the structure, due to safety concerns and has not unveiled a solid replacement option.

INDOT has stated it wants to meet with Northwest Indiana business and government leaders next month to discuss the situation.
