U.S. 31 Project to be Accelerated

The Kokomo segment of the U.S. 31 Corridor project is expected be completed by the end of 2013, two years earlier than scheduled. Governor Mitch Daniels says so far, the state has invested more than $200 million on the three segments of the U.S. 31 Corridor project near Kokomo, South Bend and Hamilton County, and they are about 20 percent complete.

INDIANAPOLIS –Governor Mitch Daniels said the Kokomo segment of the U.S. 31 Corridor project has been accelerated and should open to traffic at the end of 2013, two years earlier than scheduled, and all but the southern portion of the U.S. 31 Corridor project will be completed by the end of 2014.

Speaking to members of the U.S. 31 Coalition at its annual legislative day, the governor said that so far, the state has invested more than $200 million on the three segments of the U.S. 31 Corridor project near Kokomo, South Bend and Hamilton County, and they are about 20 percent complete.

“We’re taking an hour off the round trip and most of that will be achieved four to five years from now,” Daniels said. “While other states have shut down their road programs completely, Indiana is breaking all records for investments in our infrastructure. That’s how you attack a recession.”

Here is a Corridor update:

U.S. 31 Kokomo

·U.S. 31 freeway construction near Kokomo has been accelerated and is now on schedule for opening to traffic at the end of 2013.

·Two miles of new highway alignment are under construction. Two bridges carrying county road bridges over the planned highway are already open to traffic.

U.S. 31 Hamilton County

·The state has reaffirmed its financial commitment to upgrading existing U.S. 31 to freeway standards from I-465 to State Road 38 in Hamilton County. The project is on schedule to start in 2011 and be fully open to traffic at the end of 2018.

·The State Road 38 interchange is expected to be open to traffic by the end of 2012. At the same time, construction will be underway on one of this project’s largest phases to build an interchange system at 146th Street and 151st Street.

U.S. 31 Plymouth to South Bend

·Ten miles of new highway alignment are already under construction.

·The project is on schedule to meet its target opening date at the end of 2014.

Total investments in the U.S. 31 corridor are expected to exceed $1 billion.
