House Speaker Patrick Bauer (D-South Bend) is spearheading the push to redraw the lines between legislators and lobbyists, following what he says was an unprecedented feeding frenzy of lobbyists in the closing weeks of this year's session.

Both chambers of the Indiana General Assembly are moving forward with ethics reform proposals. A House committee has unanimously passed a measure that would require legislators or executive branch policymakers to observe a one-year "cooling-off period" before accepting lobbying jobs. A Senate proposal includes the one-year wait and also requires lobbyists to report all gifts.

Our partners at Network Indiana/WIBC report watchdog groups such as Common Cause are urging legislators to take additional action, including prohibiting all gifts from lobbyists, public financing of campaigns and a two-year cooling-off period to match the gap between legislative elections.
