Officials from two northeast Indiana cities remain upbeat about the prospects of a new casino in their area despite a legislative study committee's findings that gaming expansion is not in the best interest of the state. The committee's report recommends consolidating Gary's two riverboats into one-land based facility, leaving one gaming license available. Fort Wayne officials sought legislation last session allowing a referendum on gambling in the city.

Spokesman Ozzie Mitson tells our partners at Indiana's NewsCenter having an available license only intensifies the city's interest.
However, State Representative Matt Bell (R-83), who represents portions of Fort Wayne and sat on the study committee, says support for such a measure isn't likely at the Statehouse.
Steuben County has also acknowledged its interest in have a casino. Angola Mayor Richard Hickman says the the pursuit of a casino will be a marathon, and he believes it Steuben County will remain in the race.
