FORT WAYNE, IN – The Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority is inviting the media and public to an open house at Smith Field Airport on November 18th from Noon to 2:00 p.m. to celebrate the Grand Reopening of Runway 13/31.
The open house is to celebrate and showcase the substantial completion of the Rehabilitation of Runway 13-31 at Smith Field Airport (SMD). The rehabilitation project included sections of the pavement thatwere milled and overlaid with asphalt while other sections had complete pavement removal and replacement. In addition to the rehabilitation, there were additional drainage and lighting improvements made to the airfield.
The runway rehabilitation portion of the project is federally funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) in the amount of $1,078,671. An additional grant from the FAA’s Airport
Improvement Program allowed for additional lighting and drainage work to be completed. The amount of that federal grant was $444,370. A taxiway has been constructed with local funds in order to provide airfield access to an existing facility as well as prepare for future development.
“The completion of this project marks another milestone in the history of accomplishments at SMD,” stated Torrance Richardson, Executive Director of Airports. “This investment in Smith Field underscores our commitment to safety and serving the aviation needs of our community for years to come.”
