The Indianapolis-Carmel Metropolitan Area ranks 125th on the Milken Institute's 2009 Best Performing Cities list, slipping 44 spots from 2008. The index bases its rankings on how well an area creates and sustains jobs and economic growth. The Evansville area slipped 28 spots to 170th, Fort Wayne jumped 17 spots to 152nd, Gary improved six spots to 168th and South Bend fell two spots to 188th.

Among Small Metropolitan Areas, Bloomington fell two spots to 57th, Lafayette improved 45 spots to 62nd, Muncie increased 10 spots to 105th, Terre Haute slipped 17 spots to 112 and Elkhart-Goshen dropped 20 spots to 116th.
