Luecke also says the parks are combining with other economic development projects including Eddy Street Commons, which will support Innovation Park with retail stores and apartments, and the new cancer wing at the IU School of Medicine in South Bend.

Luecke says all are creating a sense of energy as South Bend moves to transform its economy.

The South Bend Tribune is reporting developer Kite Realty Group has not been able to secure financing for a $20 million hotel as part of the commons project.

Construction on the hotel and condominiums was to have been underway by this point.

But lenders have been wary of large hotel projects and want condos to be sold before money can be cleared for construction.
