Gary to Kick Off $32 Million Revitalization Project

InsideINdianaBusiness.com Report

The city of Gary and Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority (RDA) will host a kickoff presentation and tour Friday for the $32.1 million rehabilitation of Marquette Park. In June, Gary won a $28.2 million grant from the RDA to rehabilitate the historic 241-acre park. The city and other groups are pitching in the rest. The plan calls for improvements for the recreation pavilion, Aquatorium, Lake Street Beach and the armory currently occupied by the Charter School of the Dunes.

Press Release

Gary, Indiana-Mayor Rudolph Clay announced today that the much anticipated revitalization of historic Marquette Park will kick off with a ceremony from 3:00 to 5:00 on Friday, November 6, 2009 at the Marquette Park Pavilion. The public and stakeholders are invited to join the Mayor, the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority, the Lakefront East Advisory Board and the consultant team for an introductory presentation and tour of the park. The Marquette Park Lakefront East initiative was made possible when the City of Gary was awarded, in June 2009, a grant for $28,190,000 from the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority for planning, design, engineering, and selected capital and operational improvements.

City officials and other regional leaders will collaborate with Hitchcock Design Group and their consultant team in a comprehensive process that will be marked-support, highly collaborative, and reflective of community and stakeholder interests. “My administration wants to rejuvenate the park so that it becomes even more attractive and truly sustainable for years to come.” says Mayor Clay.

Located along the South Shore of Lake Michigan, the 241-arce Marquette Park is one of Northwest Indiana’s most admired and historic regional parks. When complete in the spring of 2010, the Lakefront East Master Plan will identify improvements that will enhance access to and circulation within the park,
preserve and strengthen the park's natural features, provide new recreational and educational amenities, and restore the park’s signature historic facilities. Collectively, when construction is completed in 2011, the rehabilitation and new improvements will help to re-establish Marquette Park as one of Northwest Indiana’s premiere lakefront destinations, enhancing the quality of life for citizens of Gary and residents of Northwest Indiana.
