Lake Station Mayor Keith Soderquist says the city will use a $330,000 federal grant to purchase up to 16 new fuel-efficient vehicles. Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report the city plans to buy five police cars, five electric cars and four trucks, including E85 models.

Lake Station recently qualified for the Congestion Mitigation Air Quality grant.
Mayor Soderquist says the funding will cover the total cost of the vehicles, meaning the city does not have to provide any matching funds. The city will only have to pay about $8,000 in administrative fees.
Beverly Shores, Crown Point, East Chicago, Gary, Portage and Valparaiso have also received the grants.
