Library Outlines Computer Expansion Project

The Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library (IMCPL) is adding more than 80 computers to its branches for users to access the Internet, conduct job searches and improve basic computer skills. IMCPL's PC Expansion Project will cost approximately $187,000 and boost the number of computers to 619. The project will be administered in three phases and scheduled to be completed by October 31.

With demand for free computer access on the rise, most locations of the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library are increasing the number of public computers available for patrons to access the Internet, conduct job searches, improve basic computer skills, and do their personal business.

IMCPL’s PC Expansion Project will be administered in three phases with scheduled completion by October 31. Throughout the IMCPL system, 81 new computers will be installed, bringing the number of public Internet computers available for free access to 619. The total cost of the project is approximately $187,000.

Computer installations are scheduled to be completed by early September at the Warren Branch (9701 E. 21st Street – 6 new computers bringing its total available for public access to 20), the East Washington Branch (2822 E. Washington Street – 5 new for 14 total), the Eagle Branch (3325 Lowry Road – 10 new for 24 total), the Fountain Square Branch (1066 Virginia Avenue - 7 new for 14 total), the Brightwood Branch (2435 N. Sherman Drive – 5 new for 15 total), and the Flanner House Branch (2424 Dr. M.L. King, Jr. Street – 5 new for 12 total).

Computer installations are scheduled to be completed by October 1 at the Wayne Branch (198 S. Girls School Road – 4 new for 17 total), the Lawrence Branch (7898 N. Hague Road – 4 new for 22 total), the Spades Park Branch (1801 Nowland Avenue – 5 new for 13 total), the Southport Branch (2630 E. Stop 11 Road – 6 new for 23 total), the Nora Branch (8625 Guilford Avenue – 4 new for 18 total), and the Shelby Branch (2502 Shelby Street – 2 new for 13 total).

Scheduled for installation by October 31 are public Internet computers at the Decatur Branch (5301 Kentucky Avenue – 4 new for 15 total), the Pike Branch (6525 Zionsville Road - 4 new for 25 total), the Haughville Branch (2121 W. Michigan Street – 3 new for 19 total), the College Avenue Branch (4180 N. College Avenue – 5 new for 21 total), and the Franklin Road Branch (5550 S. Franklin Road – 2 new for 17 total).

The East Thirty-Eighth Street Branch, 5420 E. 38th Street, will add 6 PCs in 2 phases between 2010 and 2011 as a result of The Gates Foundation On-Line Opportunities Grant.

All library locations will include power outlets for patrons to plug in their own laptop computers. In addition to providing Internet access, library computers are equipped with various word processing applications.

For the first six months of 2009, IMCPL experienced a 24% increase in the number of computer hours logged by patrons on its public computers compared to the same period in 2008. More people are coming to the library to do job searches, file unemployment claims, and learn basic computer skills.

IMCPL also offers free computer classes on Internet job searching, resume creation, word processing and other applications, and basic computer skills. For a listing of upcoming classes, visit www.imcpl.org or contact a neighborhood branch library.
