Seventy-five workers at Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel Corp.'s Gary Works facility are being laid off as the company adjusts production to meet lower demand. Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report 58 workers from iron and steel production and 17 from finishing operations were released. U.S. Steel announced this week it was laying off 677 workers from its plants in the U.S. and Canada.
Last month, the company released 800 contractors and shut down some operations. It also announced a hiring freeze and requested that hourly employees take one week of vacation beginning December 28.
Gary Works employs around 4,000 union workers.
