Press Release
(INDIANAPOLIS – July 30, 2008) -- Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard will be the guest speaker at an event Thursday in Indianapolis to honor the vision and the impact Nobel Laureate economist Milton Friedman has had on our society.
Sponsored by the Indianapolis-based Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice, the annual Friedman Legacy for Freedom day event will take place downtown at the Conrad Hilton beginning at 5:00 p.m.
The event, designed for young professionals, is part of a national campaign to introduce more people to Dr. Friedman and the principles of individual liberty that he dedicated his life to defend.
The Indianapolis event is one of 42 events taking place throughout the country this week. Friedman, who would have been 96 Thursday, was regarded as one of the world's most powerful and influential promoters of freedom. He argued that the voluntary choices of individuals, not the dictates of the state, should be the default mode of human life; government is justified only insofar as it preserves, protects and defends people's liberty. His revolutionary work in economic theory earned him the Nobel Prize in 1976.
"Dr. Friedman will be remembered around the world as one of the 20th century's greatest champions of freedom," said Robert C. Enlow, executive director of the Friedman Foundation. Enlow will also offer brief remarks at the event.
Friedman passed away in November 2006.
The Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice is a non-profit organization established in 1996 and founded upon the ideals and theories of Milton Friedman and his wife, economist Rose D. Friedman.
