Purdue University Provost Randy Woodson hopes a memorandum of understanding among his counterparts at all Big Ten institutions and the University of Chicago will lead to clear recommendations on how the Midwest economy can move forward. Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) members have signed a resolution to work together to make the regional economy more competitive. Woodson says the institutions are being brought together to stimulate collaboration across state lines on various economic issues, such as challenges facing the manufacturing sector.

Woodson says the resolution calls for a panel of experts that would would advise state governments and policy makers on strategies to ensure "strong economic well being for years to come."
He says Big Ten institutions are stepping up and letting the rest of America know universities in the Midwest have resources that could help boost the economy.
Woodson hopes to see some action on the memorandum of understanding within the next year.
