Press Release

INDIANAPOLIS (June 24, 2008) - Healthcare providers could soon have a new ally in caring for America's aging population thanks to technology being developed by a healthcare company headquartered here.

My Health Care Manager, a national provider of care coordination and health assessment and education for geriatric patients, announced today it received a $1.9 million grant from Indiana's 21st Century Research and Technology Fund to further develop a new software-based tool aimed at bringing best practices in geriatric care to provider's fingertips.

"The 21st Century Fund provides critical seed capital to emerging high-growth companies like My Health Care Manager that show the promise of creating market-changing technologies and new jobs for Hoosiers," said Nathan Feltman, Secretary of Commerce and chief executive officer of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation.

Branded as its Senior Care Navigation System or SCANSSM, the company's proprietary software will enable care providers to access and input geriatric care field experience, research data and patient outcome information in a simple, easy-to-use computer-based system.

"The SCANS project has the potential to transform the future of geriatric care," said Eric Tinsley, vice president of process, technology and training at My Health Care Manager. "Imagine a future where nurses could have their geriatric care management skills increased ten-fold. That's what the SCANS can do."

Researchers at the Indiana University School of Medicine, the nation's second-largest medical school, along with researchers in the fields of geriatrics, health informatics, engineering and computer science at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis will assist My Health Care Manager in developing the product for commercialization.

"Our team is focused on gathering information about best practices in geriatric care from disparate sources, harvesting knowledge from such information and developing and utilizing this knowledge to enhance geriatric care," said Mathew Palakal, PhD, associate dean, graduate studies and research director for the Informatics Research Institute at IUPUI, and principle investigator on the SCANS project. "These ingredients combine to place this initiative at the forefront of translational research in health and life sciences."

My Health Care Manager is one of 54 businesses awarded a 21st Century Fund grant since January 2006. During that time, the fund has invested more than $68 million in high-tech Indiana entrepreneurial companies that have the potential to create thousands of high-skill, high-wage jobs.
