ATA Discontinues Operations: Airline History

Indianapolis-based ATA Airlines was founded in 1973. It was a commercial and charter airline along with serving as a carrier for the U.S. military. At the time of the company's shutdown it had approximately 2,230 employees with more than 580 of those at its Indianapolis headquarters. ATA surpassed $1 billion in annual revenue in 1999. But it filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in 2004 and emerged from those restructuring efforts in 2006. ATA became a subsidiary of Global Aero Logistics Inc. in 2007 and filled for Chapter 11 again on April 2, 2008. Today ATA announced it has discontinued all operations.

• Aircraft Fleet: At the time of its shutdown, ATA operated 29 aircraft, many of which are leased. ATA operated Boeing 737-800s, Boeing 757-200s, Boeing 757-300s, DC10s and Lockheed L-1011s.

• Flight Routes/Cities Served: ATA was serving approximately 10,000 passengers per day at the time of its shutdown. At the time of the shutdown, ATA Airlines operated service from Chicago-Midway to Dallas/Ft. Worth, Oakland, Guadalajara and Cancun. ATA also operated service to Hawaii from Oakland, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Las Vegas.

• Corporate Ownership: ATA Airlines, Inc. is a subsidiary of Global Aero Logistics Inc.
