Press Release
INDIANAPOLIS—Verizon Wireless and the Indiana Pacers are teaming up during the 2007-2008 basketball season to raise money to help local domestic violence survivors. For every two-point field goal scored by the Pacers during the regular season, Verizon Wireless is donating $2 to the Pacers Foundation, and these funds will be directed to a domestic violence prevention agency in central Indiana. The Two-for-Two program will raise up to $15,000 to support the agency’s initiatives that directly benefit domestic violence survivors and their families.
“It takes teamwork to combat domestic violence and raise awareness of its damaging effects on individuals, families and businesses,” said Greg Haller, president–Indiana/Kentucky/ Michigan Region, Verizon Wireless. “By working together with the Pacers, we hope to raise much-needed dollars for a well-deserving domestic violence organization here in central Indiana.”
“The partnership between Verizon Wireless and the Pacers has proven to be a success in raising awareness of domestic violence,” said Jami Marsh, executive director, Pacers Foundation. “Through the Foundation, the Two-for-Two program will benefit an organization in central Indiana aimed at assisting those, specifically children, who have suffered from domestic violence.”
This is the second consecutive year that the Pacers and Verizon Wireless are teaming up to raise awareness of and help prevent domestic violence. During the 2006-2007 basketball season, the Pacers produced a public service announcement (PSA) featuring Darrell and Deidra Armstrong who spoke out against domestic violence. The PSA was shown at Conseco Fieldhouse prior to seven Pacer games.
Last year, the Pacers also held a drive to collect no-longer-used wireless equipment to benefit Verizon Wireless’ HopeLine® program. Through HopeLine, Verizon Wireless collects old wireless phones, batteries and accessories in any condition from any wireless service provider at its Communications Stores nationwide and through special drives. The phones are either refurbished for reuse or recycled in an environmentally sound way.
Proceeds from the HopeLine program are used to provide wireless phones and cash grants to local shelters and non-profit organizations that focus on domestic violence prevention and awareness. In 2007, Verizon Wireless and the Verizon Foundation have donated more than $300,000 in cash grants, phones and airtime to shelters and other organizations in Indiana working to support victims of domestic violence and their families.
