Indianapolis, Ind. -- The Indiana Health Information Exchange (IHIE) today announced the appointment of Gregory N. Larkin, M.D. to Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Larkin will help set the company’s long-term clinical strategy and priorities for the services provided by IHIE, and will work to bridge the gap between information technology and clinical settings.

Dr. Larkin joins IHIE after retiring from Eli Lilly and Company, where he was most recently the Director of Corporate Health Services.

“Greg’s appointment represents a key milestone in the continuing progress of the Indiana Health Information Exchange,” said Dr. J. Marc Overhage, President and CEO of the Indiana Health Information Exchange and Director of Medical Informatics at the Regenstrief Institute, Inc. “His clinical background, along with an uncanny ability to bring diverse groups of stakeholders together for a common purpose, is the exact skill set we need. Greg will positively impact our ability to become one of the nation’s premier providers of practical solutions to address the most difficult health care issues.”

Dr. Larkin will provide leadership for all of IHIE’s clinical services including strategy and implementation of the organization’s Quality Health First program, a nationally recognized, multi-stakeholder financial incentive program, and its DOCS4DOCS ® clinical messaging service. These innovative delivery programs are being implemented throughout Indiana, in partnership with the Regenstrief Institute, Inc., to improve health care quality and costs.

Dr. Larkin’s work with IHIE dates back a number of years. In his role at Lilly, Dr. Larkin was one of the architects of the Quality Health First program, in partnership with the Employers’ Forum of Indiana and IHIE. He was instrumental in bringing together key leadership from employers, health plans, physicians, hospitals, public officials and others into the Quality Health First program and keeping them engaged to reach consensus on difficult issues.

As president of the Indianapolis Medical Society, Dr. Larkin had the opportunity to disseminate information and learning from the Quality Health First program to a broad group of physicians and encourage their participation in the program.

As a graduate of Indiana University School of Medicine and board certified in family medicine, Dr. Larkin practiced family medicine in Greencastle, Indiana from 1975-1986. In 1986, he joined Lilly as a staff physician in the Employee Health Services component and in 1992 was promoted to the director of Corporate Health Services. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice, and a Fellow of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

While leading Lilly's Corporate Health Services, Dr. Larkin supervised the design and implementation of Lilly's domestic health plans in traditional indemnity, managed care and most recently consumer-driven HRA/HSA plans. He has introduced and published the concept of on-site medical services integrated into community health care systems, as well as designed innovative preventive health programs. He has authored and co-authored an array of articles in various peer-reviewed journals advocating innovative and competitive health care delivery programs to improve quality and costs.
