Since arriving at IU ten years ago, McRobbie has received rave reviews for being a collaborator who understands the role university’s can play in economic development. Among his significant accomplishments: crafting the university’s strategic information technology plan, securing millions of dollars in life sciences grants and funding and leading development of a fiber network linking IU, Purdue, IUPUI and other institutions. He also was a major driver in the creation of IU’s School of Informatics, the first university program in the nation to combine diverse elements of information technology into a single discipline.

The day after he was selected as IU’s 18th president McRobbie told me statewide visibility would be a priority in his administration. “I think it’s going to be very important that I spend a lot of time here (in Bloomington) and around the state visiting the regional campuses and other places I need to be,” said McRobbie.

Those other places will likely include the offices of Hoosier business and community leaders and others supporting the state’s push to compete in a knowledge-based economy. And that is a good thing.
