The Indiana Licensed Beverage Association is applauding a decision by Governor Daniels to allow bars to turn their clocks ahead at 3 a.m. this Sunday. Clocks are supposed to spring forward an hour at 2 a.m., which would then make it 3 a.m., the time most bars close. The association says losing an hour of business would cost establishments around the state a total of about $250,000. Association Executive Director Brad Klopfenstein says that can be the difference between a profit and a loss for many businesses.

Press Release
As Indiana looks at turning their clocks forward for the second time in recent years this weekend, Governor Daniels has decreed that bars will not have to turn their clocks ahead until 3am this Sunday morning. This is a reversal from previous correspondence from the Governor’s office indicating that bars would have to close at 2am when the clocks are supposed to be turned forward one hour.
In 2006, the first time in over 30 years that most of Indiana observed Daylight Saving Time, the NCAA Final Four was in Indianapolis and Governor Daniels allowed bars to operate their normal hours to allow for hosting our visitors from around the country. Estimates from 2006 were that Indiana bars & restaurants would lose close to $250,000 if they had to close an hour earlier then normal.
A letter Indiana Excise Police Superintendent Alex Huskey was as follows:
“Governor Daniels has directed that bars, restaurants and taverns in Indiana can change their clocks one hour after the official start of Daylight Saving Time this weekend. The Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission will recognize sales as lawful during that time. Alcohol and Tobacco Commissioner Dave Heath said this means that bar owners can operate as usual overnight Saturday and remain open for their Standard hours.
As a reminder, according to federal law that becomes effective this year, Daylight Saving Time will begin at 2:00 a.m. on March 11 and end at 2:00 a.m. November 4”
