The coalition reminds businesses and residents that they must update computer clocks and portable electronic devices to the appropriate DST setting. Indiana counties switching to Eastern Daylight Time will “spring ahead” by adding one hour to all clocks. Counties moving to Central Daylight Time will not change their clocks until the fall when both time zones will "fall back" an hour.

Press Release

Indianapolis (March 30, 2006) – The Hoosier Daylight Coalition, led by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, Techpoint, the Indiana Manufacturers Association (IMA), the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), the Indiana Association of Realtors, and the Indiana Builders Association (IBA), hosted a media briefing on Tuesday, March 28, 2006 to discuss Indiana’s upcoming daylight saving time (DST) change-over on April 2 and provided easy hints and tips for making the historic switch. Experts gave a live demonstration of how to update computer clocks to the appropriate DST setting and published a list of multiple resources for Hoosier businesses and families.

As Indiana prepares to observe DST, members of the Coalition will continue to act as a resource for Hoosiers. DST begins on the first Sunday in April. This year, the switch takes place on April 2, 2006 at 2:00 a.m. Indiana counties switching to Eastern Daylight Time will “spring ahead” by adding one hour to all clocks. Counties moving to Central Daylight Time will not change their clocks until the end of daylight saving time, which occurs on the last Sunday of October, when both Eastern and Central time zones will “fall back” an hour.

“On April 2nd, Hoosiers will make the historic switch to daylight saving time,” said Cameron Carter, Techpoint President and CEO. “Thanks to much advance publicity and technical resources available through members of the Hoosier Daylight Coalition and vendors such as Microsoft, we should be looking at a smooth transition.”

Some of the benefits that DST observance will bring to all Hoosiers include an extra hour for outdoor activities in the summer, a reduction in energy usage and costs, a reduction in crime and increased traffic safety. In addition, the state’s business community will benefit by joining 47 other states and 70 nations that recognize DST, minimizing missed meetings and conference calls, and providing an additional incentive for companies to relocate or expand in Indiana.

“The introduction of daylight saving time in Indiana is long overdue,” states Indiana Chamber of Commerce President Kevin Brinegar. “It removes an unnecessary barrier to business development and expansion, while providing advantages for workers and families across the state. Indiana will benefit for years to come from simply ‘springing forward and falling back’ with the residents of 47 other states.”

“The switch to DST for all of Indiana is great news to Indiana’s homebuilders. From an economic development and quality of life standpoint, DST will make Indiana a better place to live,” said Rick Wajda, CEO of the Indiana Builders Association.

According to Karl Berron, Vice President of Government Relations for the Indiana Association of Realtors, "There's no excuse for us as Hoosiers not to do everything in our power to remove barriers to new investment."
