Strand Diagnostics President Ken Cerney tells a terrifying—and yet true—account of medical mistaken identity: a woman underwent a radical mastectomy after her breast biopsy revealed cancer—only to discover post-surgery that her biopsy was mixed up with another patient's, and she, in fact, did not have the disease. Strand's platform technology, the Know Error system, aims to prevent such mistakes; the Indianapolis-based company recently raised $30 million in Series A funding from California-based NantWorks to expand into other segments of the marketplace to ensure patient identity.
