It's a fair complaint- if you are a fantastic chef and you were put on this earth to create, it really stinks that you also have to deal with payroll and ordering supplies, and yes, marketing your fledgling restaurant. I'm here to tell you, however, that you can and must do this. If the public doesn't know about your fabulous food, you're cheating them out of a great culinary experience and cheating yourself out of a great deal of income, without which you won't be cooking for long.

Here are a few easy ways to heighten your company's profile without breaking the bank:

1. Perform an annual check-up of marketing materials. Businesses commonly develop marketing materials as separate projects. When the neighbor's kid makes your Web site, you order business cards online and create your brochure on the office printer, you can look like a fragmented group of companies instead of a single, consistent one. As your company grows, the message and image of the business can evolve or change. It's critical to review the materials that touch current and prospective clients to ensure the right image and message is being presented. Your materials don't need to be expensive, but they do need to be consistent.

2. Offer an e-newsletter. Depending the industry, you may have to "touch" prospective clients seven to ten times before making a sale. There is also the challenge of staying in front of current clients as your business grows. An e-newsletter can serve as a non-intrusive way to communicate your company news and announcements. It is a great way to send relevant information to a group who has chosen to hear from you. Also, a variety of email programs are available to provide intelligence and measurement of your newsletter: you can know who opened it and what specifically they clicked on within it.

3. Become an expert. With the rise of social networking, there are countless ways to become the go-to expert in your community. Make it a habit to visit online forums that are specific to your industry or target clients. You can quickly answer existing questions or create a new discussion topic based on your expertise. You can also pursue traditional mediums of writing articles for local or trade publications. Becoming an expert keeps you in front of clients, allows you to speak to a targeted group and position yourself for strong brand recognition and word-of-mouth.

Of course, there are many marketing tactics and companies that will get your business great results, but lots of folks need to generate more business in order to swing that marketing budget, and there's no reason why you can't get started on your own. It's time to let the world know about the great work you're doing.
